One Month in Maine

I am spending a rainy windy day in my apartment in Acadia National Park. This is the first day I've just gotten back to some of those personal, internal intellectual activities I am so into in the winter: blogging, posting to favorite online groups about trees and forests, reading. I see that the weather on a northern coast island is beautiful and awful in the way winter is- blustery, hard to venture out into for long periods of time, beckoning one to curl up at home under a blanket. Kinda like… Continue

You're Invited...

I would like to invite the Primal Forest Network members to follow a blog that I write, from which I have drawn some of the material I have in my blog here. It is largely reflections on my experiences in exploring and reflecting on forests, tree and nature, in my life of exploring wild New England and also in my work as an ecologist. It does veer off into other topics as well, and is a personal, diary type blog. http://themusicwhichihear.blogspot.com/ Continue

Exquisite Moments in Old New England Forests

This spring, after a challenging time of looking for good work in the worst economy imaginable, I was so very fortunate to obtain my dream job. Of all that I applied for, this was the one I wanted. So now, I am employed as the one primarily responsible for managing the health of plants in Acadia National Park. How great is that?? The move to Ma… Continue

Tree Grief

Posted to the ENTS (Eastern Native Tree Society). It is the first time I wrote out my story of the ash tree in Bellbrook. Also includes a revision of a poem several years old. Robert Leverett, a authority on Eastern Old Growth, enjoyed the poem. One reply said, no doubt the tree speaks to you still. As a newer member of ENTS, I have been browsing many posts, and have been heartened by the blend of science, spirit, insight, and aesthetics I find here. It suits me just fine. I have been loathe e… Continue

Winter Unwired

Well the last few days have been spent in the aftermath of an ice storm: beautiful, glowing exquisite crystalline scenes rarely offered. I should probably describe the days more completely as beautiful, dark, brilliant, cold and quiet: the power went off for several days. And though my spirit was more than up for it, my body quickly because ill, fighting something, as I dealt with adjusting to limited warmth and then sudden extreme cold outside. I was happy to change my bedding and clothes, to s… Continue
